Helpful resources for Arts Educators

  • “Andante or Allegro?” Download 6-7 songs, 3-4 fast songs, and 3-4 slower songs. Remind the children that “Andante” means a slower, walking speed. Have the children walk in place at an andante pace, to help them feel the rhythm. Then remind them that “Allegro” means a more lively, running speed. Have them run in place so they can feel the allegro rhythm in their bodies. Now play 15-20 seconds of the songs you’ve downloaded and have them walk in place to the beat of each song. Is the song “Andante” or is it “Allegro”?

  • “Director Says” Remind children what we learned about the Director. The Director tells the performers “where to walk, where to stand, how to gesture with their hand…” A simple game of “Director Says” is just like playing “Simon Says”, but encourages kids to act, and be expressive with their bodies and faces. “Director says laugh. Director says act surprised. Director says roar like a lion. Director says make a face like you just ate something yucky.”

For Ages 4-6 yrs old

  • “Costume Designer” This is an arts and crafts project that will require some preparation. Download the body form here which will be the basis for our costume designers. Pick up some scrap fabric from fabric stores or clothes at thrift stores. Cut out little shirts, pants skirts, hats, dresses, shoes, overalls, etc. from the scrap fabric. For class, have the children pick out their clothing pieces and glue it to their body form. They are now costume designers! What is their characters name? Where are they going in this outfit?
